Robert was just about 10 years old when he saw Montgomery Clift in the movie “From Here to Eternity.”. Clift made a great impression on him with his portrayal of Pvt. Robert E. Lee Prewitt. Robert felt himself close to the character. Clift's character Prewitt was a loner who had his principles and wouldn't betray them. Clift impressed him so much, he tried to adapt these characteristics for himself.
The 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet also played its part in Robert Beltran's wish to dedicate himself to acting, and in 1979 he played the role of Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet as a freshman at the Bakersfield College. (1)
Robert says these were probably the two most important moments in developing the desire to become an actor.
His career started on stage, and even though he has made countless appearances in films and TV series and created a monument to himself with the character of Commander Chakotay in Star Trek Voyager, he is and remains a stage actor and continues to work passionately as an actor, director, and teacher.

CHAKOTAY & MORE

"Have fun with it. Don't take it too serious..."  Robert Beltran

Is there any other character in the Star Trek universe so deeply loved and not so much liked as Robert Beltran's Commander Chakotay in Star Trek Voyager?

Or does it have more to do with the actor himself?

It seems Robert himself maybe has more in common with Chakotay than he may think?
