Thoughts:
Elvis? Is Robert singing an Elvis song?
No one sounds like Elvis. No one... except Dean Z.
I am very critical of people singing Elvis songs.
When I was 9 years old, I started to love his music accidentally. I got my first Walkman, and I needed a tape to listen to. I went to my dad's stuff and chose a tape. It was an Elvis tape. Me doing nothing halfway, I started to become an Elvis addict with 9.
Star Trek with 8, Elvis with 9. Yes, you have to start early with important things. ;)
I liked Elvis for 7-8 years. I stopped when I noticed I felt unwell to say that I like his music, because there always popped up a picture in my mind of one of those ridiculous Elvis impersonators. Most of them can sing, but they don't have a good voice. There are women, too, running around in a white jumpsuit with his hairstyle, sunglasses, and ... I feel extremely unwell with that. (Don't misunderstand me; everyone is free to do whatever makes them happy, but I also have the freedom not to like it.)
This experience is one reason why I am very critical about those wannabes, and to me, there is only one who is really outstanding, and this is Dean Z. He does not only sing like Elvis; he also talks like him. Here is a clip of the 1968 Elvis Comeback Tribute by Dean Z.
Ok, why this much talking about Elvis and performances of impersonators?
As far as I know, Robert sung Elvis's Heartbreak Hotel at the Galaxy Ball 1999, hosted by him and the Marriott Hotel Los Angeles Airport in support of the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles, Inc.
The sound file doesn't exist anymore on the internet, or I couldn't find it, but I saved it back then.
I have no idea who was at the right time at the right place to record it. To the person who did it: thank you, and of course all rights belong to you.
Listen for yourself; Robert is doing a great job. Love to listen to him, and I don't say that lightly.
